Consulting Services

I work directly with your organization to diagnose delivery issues, coach teams, and drive lasting improvement. Every engagement is scoped and tailored to the specific needs of the client.

01. Advisory Engagement

Question-and-answer sessions and hands-on coaching.

In an advisory engagement, I am available for question-and-answer sessions and hands-on coaching about various Agile practices.

Advisory engagements are useful when a client has an existing Agile process but is dissatisfied with how well the process is working and wants some help improving it.

02. Assessment

An investigation into issues interfering with product delivery.

An assessment is an investigation into issues that are interfering with the client’s ability to function well and deliver products on a timely basis.

It involves stakeholder interviews, analysis, preparation of findings and recommendations, and delivery of a final report which highlights action items to address the issues discovered.

Assessments are particularly useful when the issues affecting the client are unclear and subject to confusion and disagreement.

03. Agile Transformation

Converting a development organization to an Agile process.

An Agile transformation takes a client through the process of converting a development organization from its previous state to the desired Agile process.

The scope can be as small as a single team, or as large as multiple teams spanning the globe for a large enterprise.

The basic stages of a transformation include scoping, planning, training, kick-off, and coaching the organization until people have mastered the new world well enough to stand on their own.

Depending on needs, an Assessment may also be included.

Consulting FAQ

Engagement Questions

What kinds of organizations do you work with?

I work with organizations that develop complex products, with a particular focus on hardware and integrated hardware-software engineering. My clients have included organizations in biotechnology, robotics, aerospace, telecommunications, and other engineering-intensive industries.

What does an Agile assessment involve?

An Agile assessment begins by working with the sponsor to identify the issues that will be the focal point of the assessment and the people or groups to be interviewed. The next step is to interview the identified individuals and groups to develop an understanding of the issues. The findings are then analyzed to identify recurring patterns, organizational strengths, and opportunities for improvement, followed by development of the assessment report. The report contains conclusions, recommendations, and suggested next steps. Depending on the organization's needs, the next steps may include an Agile transformation, targeted coaching, training, or other process improvements.

Can you help organizations that already use Scrum?

Yes. It is not uncommon that an organization already has Scrum Teams but finds that they are having difficulties and experiencing confusion about how to work effectively with the Scrum framework. For example, they may be trying to use some of the software-oriented practices in a hardware context where they do not fit. In these cases, I will work with the teams and coach them to reduce confusion and improve their effectiveness.

How is your approach different from traditional Agile consulting?

Most Agile consulting has been developed around software organizations. My work focuses on adapting Agile to the realities of hardware and multidisciplinary engineering, including specialized engineering disciplines, long lead-time components, prototype-driven development, Release Planning, dependency management, and technical decision-making. The goal is to improve delivery predictability, reduce late-stage surprises, and strengthen cross-functional coordination in complex engineering environments.

Who should be involved in an Agile transformation?

Successful Agile transformations require the active involvement of engineering leadership and the engineering teams performing the work. For larger or organization-wide transformations, executive sponsorship is often essential to establish priorities, remove organizational obstacles, and sustain the change. If the engagement includes Agile portfolio management, the leaders responsible for investment and portfolio decisions should also participate.

Do you deliver consulting on-site or remotely?

I provide both on-site and remote consulting. For assessments, transformations, training, and other complex engagements, I strongly recommend on-site consulting because it allows richer interaction, direct observation of engineering teams, and more effective coaching. Remote consulting works well for follow-up coaching sessions, advisory meetings, and focused problem-solving discussions. If I believe an engagement would benefit significantly from being conducted on-site, I'll recommend that approach.
